About
"The Happy Prince"Role:
Town folk
“The Happy Prince” is a theatrical production that preserves and reimagines the expressive tools of Western visual art, dance, and theatre. It subtly pays homage to the influential figures in director Povilas Makauskas’ creative journey, including theatre luminaries such as Gintaras Varnas, Rimas Tuminas, and Robert Wilson. Deliberately distancing itself from references to popular culture, the performance crafts an elite, introspective world—one that resonates with the post-independence generation raised in art schools, music academies, and ballet studios, where classical forms remain foundational. This production speaks to those for whom the starlit night of the Happy Prince evokes not only the sky, but also the vaulted ceiling of a theatre—where the lights dim and real life begins. Makauskas’ “The Happy Prince” is ultimately an invitation to believe in the power of art, with the silhouetted figure of the Prince—framed by drifting clouds—standing as the director’s poetic signature.
